Solar Watts - Watt the Heck is That?

!±8± Solar Watts - Watt the Heck is That?

Solar watts are what make your residential solar power kit world go around. It is imperative to know how the solar watt thing all works into the mix if you are considering adding solar "anything" to your home.

Now, unless you love to watch grass grow, paint dry and water boil getting into the exact science of what a solar watt is and how it was born to be a solar watt can actually work better than morphine at putting you to sleep.

It's not imperative to know the specifics. I don't care to know how my picture on my TV gets there out of thin air via a satellite signal but it does and as long as I push the button on the remote and it shows up..hey..I'm good.

What you do need to know about solar watts is basically how they work, how you get them and how many you are going to need to start building your own home solar kit.

Put on your propeller cap and let's get started. It all begins with the solar cell. Each cell is made up of different layers using various types of silicon which capture the photon light of the sun that then releases electrons onto a grid within the cell which produces electricity.

Believe me, that was a long story short but you get the idea. Each solar cell can produce around .5 volts. Solar cells are then grouped together called modules. Modules vary in size depending on what you are using them for.

It takes about 18 volts to produce 1 watt of electrical power so a module containing 36 cells will give you approximately 2 watts of power.

By using these rough estimates it then becomes easy for you to determine how many modules you need to install to cover the watt usage you expect to need for a 24 hour period.

By putting in a storage system such as deep cycle batteries and a power converter you can actually store up a ton of "watts" thereby cutting down on the actual number of modules you need...but that is another article.

In a nut shell, your power system requirements are all dependent on the number of watts you are using each day. Solar cells are designed to turn all those raging lite photons into watts for you to tap into.

It's getting extremely easy to set up your own residential solar power kit for your home and there is some excellent information available on just how to do it if you know where to look.

Start off small if you are just getting going. Maybe you want to power a water heater or fridge or even something small like your computer. It can be done quickly and easily and nearly all components you can get at your local hardware store.
